Physicians schooled outside of the United States or Canada who wish to work in the United States have a number of variables to consider. Physicians who wish to provide direct patient care must obtain ECFMG certification, complete a U.S. residency program, obtain state licensure, find a post-residency position, and obtain appropriate work authorization through U.S. Immigration & Citizenship Services (USCIS). If a physician wishes to teach, perform research, or act as an administrator in a health care facility, then he or she may avoid certification and licensure issues and pursue a more direct route to work with a U.S. employer either through non-immigrant and/or immigrant visa options.
